Training in scientific writing for the ESSTI A&A post-graduate students (M.Sc. and PhD) and staff members

Objective:

This training aims to improve the writing skills of our post-graduate students and staff members regarding the preparation of their research papers, M.Sc./PhD dissertations, scientific proposals, etc. The training will consist of two parts, theoretical and practical. A detailed description of both parts
is given below.
Trainer: Dr. Mirjana Pović (ESSTI)
Place: ESSTI main building conference room, 4th floor
Participants: A&A Department staff members, including the Instrumentation Unit (10 people), PhD students (7), and M.Sc. students (14). The total number of expected participants is therefore 31.

Part 1: Theory with examples

(Thursday, 12 May 2022, from 13:30 – 17:00, or 7:30 – 10:00 local time)
The training in scientific writing will cover three parts:

  1. Writing mechanics for manuscript development: grammar, punctuations, specialized vocabulary, and style.
  2. Ethics in information usage for manuscript development: citations, referencing, footnotes, endnotes, plagiarism, paraphrasing, and ethics.
  3. Journal selection techniques and journal scientometrics characteristics (impact factor, h-index, journal Eigen factor, etc.), article submission, responding to reviewers, and handling rejected manuscripts.

Part 2: Theory with examples

(Friday, 13 May 2022, from 13:30 – 17:00, or 7:30 – 10:00 local time)

All participants are supposed to bring their manuscripts that are under preparation and work on improving them, taking into account what has been covered in Part 1 of the training. Instead of a manuscript, the participants can also bring any other scientific document that they are currently working on, such as their M.Sc./PhD proposal, M.Sc./PhD dissertation draft, scientific proposal, etc.
