1. About the Department

Remote sensing Research and Development (RSR&DD) is one of the departments under Entoto Observatory and Research center, Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute (EESTI). The department has performing the following two major activities.

Training: The Remote sensing Research and Development Department (RSR&DD) is mainly dedicated to provide Master of Science (MSc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) training in Remote sensing Science, Technology and Application. The training is mainly focused on the fundamental science, technology and application of Photogrammetry, LiDAR Remote sensing, hyperspectral remote sensing, thermal remote sensing, microwave remote sensing (SAR, InSAR) as well as and atmospheric remote sensing. The training modality is mainly composed of a mixture of theory and extensive practical/computational work to provide profound research skills to become independent researcher.

Research: Our research dimension is targeted to contribute a solution for the contemporary Ethiopian development challenges as well as our country’s development needs and agendas. More specifically, our research outputs will provide solutions using multispectral remote sensing, thermal remote sensing, hyperspectral remote sensing, photogrammetry, LiDAR remote sensing and atmospheric remote sensing. Subsequently, all these remote sensing fields would be translated into the following research areas.

  1. Selected Thematic Research Areas

Agricultural Modernization, Production and Productivity and Food Security Enhancement in Ethiopia: This thematic area shall address the contribution of remote sensing science, technology and applications based services, products and tools for supporting digital soil mapping; range land management and development in Ethiopia; development, management and forecasting crop growth and agricultural production; promoting sustainable agriculture adapted to climate change impacts;  achieving food security in Ethiopia and providing accurate, timely information on agricultural production status, outlook and forecasts in Ethiopia.

Water Resources Management and Development in Ethiopia: This thematic area shall address the contribution of remote sensing science, technology and applications based services, products and tools for supporting management of water resources; fostering and maintaining water quality; developing systems for monitoring the availability and sustainable management of both surface and underground water through science-based investigation which is informed by Earth observations approaches (i.e., Photogrammetry, UAV, Remote sensing, Geodesy, and GNSSS) modelling and data integration.
  4. Developing prediction and forecasting services and systems for drought and flood disasters resilience in Ethiopia: This thematic area shall address the contribution of remote sensing science, technology and applications based services, products and tools by increasing capacity to prepare, forecast, mitigate, manage and recover from drought and flood disasters in Ethiopia.
  1. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Sustainability: This thematic area shall address the contribution of remote sensing science, technology and applications based services, products and tools by bridging manifold types of observation data and knowledge to provide information on the health of Earth’s biological and ecological systems and their services to society; for strengthen conservation, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems and biodiversity in Ethiopia and developing systems for Atmosphere-biosphere interactions in Ethiopia.

Energy and Mineral Resources Management and Development in Ethiopia: This thematic area shall address the contribution of remote sensing science, technology and applications based services, products and tools for enhancing the discovery, development and sustainable production of mineral and renewable energy resources through usable, actionable information on resource assessment, monitoring and forecasting of recurrent energy sources, including solar, wind, hydropower, geo-thermal power and biomass.
  1. Sustainable Urban Development, Infrastructure and Transportation Management: This thematic area shall address the contribution of remote sensing science, technology and applications based services, products and tools for 1) in order to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable and 2) by providing support for planning, monitoring and management of infrastructure safety (dams, roads, rail, ports, and pipelines) and transportation (air, land and railway).
